Letter from the President
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and this year we are especially excited about the programs we have in store for you. As you can see from the list of events included in this newsletter, there are some great opportunities to broaden your understanding of dyslexia and learn new ways to get kids the help they need.
Our upcoming October 14th presentation, Steps to Success, is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come hear teens talk about the challenges dyslexia brings to the study process. The teen panel format is always popular with our audiences. This year we are fine-tuning the topic to address study skills. Teens will talk about the organizational challenges they face and what solutions they have found to be most helpful. The panel will be followed by a very practical talk on study skills by learning specialist Diane Spicer. Diane works with students on the San Francisco Peninsula and is very sought after by both parents and kids. Students have come away from her programs saying, "Mom, she totally gets it!" Come join us on October 14th so you can "get it," too.
If you have not had an opportunity to attend one of our simulations, "Put Yourself in the Shoes of a Person with Dyslexia," please join us at one of these events in October. Simulations will be offered at various locations in the Bay Area to highlight Dyslexia Awareness Month. Attendees feel it is an incredibly insightful experience into what it feels like to have difficulty with learning. They often wish they had brought a family member or teacher with them. Don't miss out!
Lastly, another great learning opportunity for parents and educators is the IDA National Conference, which will be held November 8-11 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is one of our country's premiere conferences on the latest research, teaching, and techniques for working with dyslexic students. There is more information about the national conference in this newsletter and on our website. You will be very glad you came.
We look forward to having you with us this fall!
Sincerely,
Barb Langeloh
