Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension

a lecture by
Marcia Henry, Ph.D.

Saturday, April 29, 2006
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Registration at 8:30 a.m.)
Golden Gate Room, Bldg. A
Fort Mason Center, San Francisco

Before students can comprehend what they read, they need strong vocabularies as well as accurate and fluent decoding skills. In this workshop, Dr. Henry will discuss effective strategies for enhancing decoding, fluency, and vocabulary in students of all ages. Building these skills is essential for students' comprehension of both narrative and expository text. This workshop is designed for elementary and secondary school teachers, educational therapists, tutors, and others interested in research-based instructional intervention for children with reading difficulties.

Marcia Henry, Ph.D., has 46 years of experience in the fields of reading and dyslexia, working as a teacher, diagnostician, tutor, author and professor. A past president of The International Dyslexia Association and former director of the Center for Educational Research on Dyslexia at San Jose State University, Dr. Henry lectures frequently at conferences and provides professional development seminars on teaching reading and language arts. Dr. Henry, who has a doctorate from Stanford University in educational psychology, consults with several school districts and states on informed reading instruction. She is the author of Unlocking Literacy and coauthor with Nancy Redding of the program Patterns for Success in Reading and Spelling. She also writes for and serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals. In 2000 the IDA honored Dr. Henry with the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award.
