Letter from the President of NCBIDA:
After all the rain that we have had these past few months, I am enjoying the
signs of spring I see in my garden. Itıs an exciting season of growth and
new beginnings. In keeping with the spring spirit, NCBIDA is offering many
opportunities for you to grow professionally in the months ahead.
We are thrilled that author and educator Marcia Henry will be the featured
speaker at our April 29th event, "Strategies for Improving Reading
Comprehension." Marcia is a nationally recognized expert in the fields of
reading and spelling. I always enjoy listening to her lectures and come
away with insights that I can put to immediate use with my students. Marcia
is a familiar figure to many in our geographic area. She is not only a past
president of our national organization, but also a past president of our
local IDA branch. Plan on joining us for an enriching morning at Fort Mason
in San Francisco on Saturday, April 29th.
If you are a teacher, you may be looking ahead to summer. I strongly
encourage you to make room in your summer schedule for training in
multisensory structured language instruction (MSLI). Teachers who undergo
this training consistently report that it is one of the most valuable
professional development activities they have ever participated in. Several
Slingerland and Orton-Gillingham-based programs are available in the Bay
Area, as you can see from the course listings in this newsletter. Our branch
will once again be providing partial scholarships to teachers who enroll in
Slingerland trainings. Deadlines are around the corner, so now is the time
to make those plans. Don't let another summer go by without giving yourself
this terrific professional growth opportunity.
