Letter from the President
Take Advantage of Opportunities for Professional Growth

Supporting teacher training in multisensory methods is an important part of our branch activities. You will find in this newsletter a schedule of multisensory structured language instruction (MSLI) classes that will be taught in the Bay Area this summer. If you are a teacher who has not taken one of these courses, I highly encourage you to set aside time to make this investment in your professional growth. Both you and your students will benefit enormously. I took my first multisensory training course 21 years ago. I remember walking away from it, thinking, "Now I finally understand how to teach reading in a way that will enable my students to 'get it.'" That specialized instruction was clearly the best training I received in my undergraduate work in general education and my postgraduate work in special education. Since that first class, I have added to my "tool belt" of teaching techniques by taking other MSLI classes. This is such valuable training, and such a gift to your students. It really works!

Our branch is also offering partial scholarships to teachers who are planning on taking a formally accredited multisensory program this summer. See details in the scholarship section of this newsletter. Applications are available through our website, www.dyslexia-ncbida.org, or by calling our office at 650-328-7667. The application deadline is fast approaching, so apply soon!

The writing workshop series presented by our branch this year has been a huge success. The last workshop, scheduled for April 9th, will focus on how computer-based programs can streamline the writing process. Parents and teachers alike will find practical information for helping their struggling students. We hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Barb Langeloh
