Teacher Training Scholarships Awarded

An important part of our branch mission is to support teachers in their quest for more effective educational programs. This year, we were honored to award full and partial scholarships to many dedicated teachers, administrators, and specialists attending comprehensive courses in multisensory structured language education. The courses we support with financial aid are all carefully evaluated and accredited by IMSLEC -- the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council -- and involve both extensive coursework and supervised teaching experience. Our recipients this year attended either Slingerland or Orton Gillingham programs and have agreed to give inservices to colleagues and parents at their schools, sharing what they have learned.

CONGRATULATIONS to the following teachers: Elizabeth Dinman of Alameda (Tyler Gebhardt Memorial Scholarship), Alyce Ford-Gilbert of Oakland (Pauline Austin Adams Memorial Scholarship), John Gulino of San Francisco (Dr. Leon Whitsell Memorial Scholarship), and Sara Levine of Menlo Park (Scholarship in honor of Dr. Wilbur Mattison). Winners of awards from an anonymous scholarship fund designated to support multisensory structured language training for general classroom teachers who work with large numbers of students, particularly in the early elementary grades, are: Malinda Bauman, Allison Dutter, and Heidi Hoblit -- all of Modesto; Kitty Jacobs of Fremont; Deborah Kimsey of El Cerrito; Shawn Usha of Oakland; Tiffany Kendall of San Francisco; Jennifer Major of San Jose; Renee Alloy of Palo Alto; and Jodi Campbell of Mountain View. As their enthusiastic reactions filter back to us, we know that children and adults everywhere are reaping the benefits of quality teacher training.

Remember, our scholarship program will be in full swing again next year, offering financial aid to another group of committed educators. Watch for reminders, course listings, and the application in future newsletters!
