In addition to efficient decoding skills, comprehension requires fluency, a strong vocabulary, a broad knowledge base, and critical thinking skills. This workshop will provide research-based strategies and instructional tools that can be used to help students improve their comprehension and teach them to "think about their thinking" as they read. Sample lesson plans designed to improve comprehension of narrative and expository text, poetry, graphs, and news articles will be presented. Educators will leave with practical activities that they can immediately use in their classrooms.

Suzanne Carreker is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and Director of Program Development at Neuhaus Education Center, which has offered professional development in scientifically based reading methods to over 36,000 teachers since its inception in 1980. Ms. Carreker frequently speaks at regional and national conferences, has authored multisensory curricula, and consults nationally.
