Letter from the President
Ins and Outs of Testing for Dyslexia

This newsletter is dedicated to the theme of assessment. Testing to determine the nature of a child's learning difficulties is an important step in helping a struggling student. Assessment gives parents and teachers a clearer picture of the child's strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive assessment describes a child's learning patterns with words that can be used by parents and children to think about and discuss these important issues together. In addition, recommendations provide a road map to guide efforts toward appropriate help for the child.

We have included information of use to both parents and teachers in this issue. Parents will find articles about testing for dyslexia and what to expect from an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Pamm Scribner's article Off to See the Wizard gives parents a model for guiding their child through the assessment process. Educators will be particularly interested in an excerpt from a chapter written by Nancy Mather discussing the connection between the results of cognitive testing and recommendations for teaching approaches most effective for children with specific academic achievement weaknesses (Contemporary Intellectual Assessment, edited by Dawn Flanagan et al).

Don't forget to register for our January 29th workshop, "Successful Teaching Approaches," which will be held at The Nueva School in Hillsborough. It is the second workshop in our three-part Writing Research, Writing Practice series, and will feature break-out sessions to meet specific needs of teachers and parents. More details about this event are included in this newsletter.

We are also thrilled to announce that our website has undergone a complete make-over. We hope you will find it to be a more user-friendly and helpful resource. We have changed our website's look and added news sections to the site, such as a resources page that includes IDA's helpful "Just the Facts" sheets. Please visit us at dyslexia-ncbida.org and spread the news.

Thank you for partnering with us to help individuals with dyslexia. As always, we welcome suggestions on how we can serve you better.

Sincerely,
Barb Langeloh
