Plan Ahead for Summer 2006 Scholarships for Teacher Training

The Northern California Branch of the International Dyslexia Association invites classroom teachers, resource/learning specialists, instructional aides and others directly supporting language skills acquisition by young students in the classroom setting to apply for summer 2006 multisensory structured language instruction (MSLI) training scholarships. These scholarships provide partial funding for MSLI training programs offered at various locations in Northern California.

Priority will be given to classroom teachers, particularly those in grades K-2, but all are encouraged to apply and will be considered, depending on available funding.

Scholarships are provided for programs accredited by The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). Details as to which trainings (Slingerland, Orton-Gillingham, etc.) will be available, when they will take place, and tuition costs will be posted on our website, www.dyslexia-ncbida.org, by March 1, 2006. At that time you will also be able to download a 2006 scholarship application with instructions for its completion.

What you can do now

  • Check the testimonials in this issue of the newsletter from scholarship recipients who participated in training programs in summer 2005.
  • Visit the scholarship section of our website (www.dyslexia-ncbida.org) to view a copy of last year's application.
  • Tuitions for accredited training programs average $2,000; last year our scholarships ranged from $500 to $1,300. Begin planning how you will fund the 40 to 60 percent of the overall tuition that you will likely be responsible for. Be sure to explore financial resources within your school and district.
  • Tell your school principal or other supervisor that you are interested in taking MSLI summer training. Let them know you will be asking them to write a recommendation for you by the application deadline.
