Letter from the President

Teachers and parents, it is through multisensory structured teaching that students with dyslexia learn best. At our February 10th workshop, Make It Multisensory: How Structured Language Approaches Help Struggling Students, educator Nancy Redding will offer newcomers an overview of the elements of this approach and experienced teachers new techniques for their multisensory structured language repertoire. Join us for this morning presentation, which will be held at Holy Names College in Oakland. Jane Ashley's article in this newsletter tells of the incredible impact this type of teaching has made on her students in Castro Valley. Spread the news and bring colleagues with you. It will be a morning well spent!

We will also be offering our simulation, Put Yourself in the Shoes of a Person with Dyslexia, in the afternoon of the February 10th event. This simulation will be free, but you must pre-register for it, as seating is limited. These simulations give participants an appreciation, particularly on an emotional level, of what it is like to have dyslexia. Parents and professionals who have attended in the past always comment on what an incredibly eye-opening experience it is. Please register to join us on that day.

This is also the time of year when we have changes to our board. I want to extend a hearty thank you to Cathy Dunn, Lynne Stietzel, Melissa King, and Allison Seidel, who are going off the board at this time. Their efforts have helped our community better understand dyslexia and better appreciate individuals with this learning disability. Thank you! In addition, I am moving off as Branch President and want to warmly welcome Leslie Lingaas Woodward, who will succeed me. Leslie has been serving as Vice President and supporting our public relations efforts. We all look forward to her leadership. It has been a pleasure to serve you these past three years. NCBIDA is a wonderful organization of dedicated parents and professionals making a difference in Northern California.

Sincerely,
Barb Langeloh
