Assistive technology (AT) can be a lifesaver for students with learning differences, helping them to manage their academic load as they move through school. Through lecture and demonstration, this workshop will survey a range of AT options, from simple devices to sophisticated software programs for reading, writing, and note-taking. Some of the tools that will be explored include reading rulers, smart pens, graphic organizers, and comprehensive text-to-speech software. Attendees will learn about the laws pertaining to AT and IEPs, and how to determine what AT is right for their student or child. Practical applications and strategies for implementation will be discussed. Participants will learn resources for acquiring assistive technology so they can meet each student's needs.

Jan Tuber is an assistive technology specialist for learning disabilities at Parents Helping Parents (PHP), a parent training and information center. Jan has a B.S. in Human Development from the University of California, Davis and an M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Gallaudet University. She has extensive experience working with special-needs populations, and is the parent of a young adult with dyslexia.
