T e a c h e r s T
r a i n i n g s S c h o l a r s h i p s
Each year, the Board of Directors of the NCBIDA offers several partial
scholarships for multisensory structured language teacher training.
Who is eligible to apply?
Northern California professional educators--and those in training to become
professional educators in Northern California. This includes public and
private school classroom teachers and resource specialists, as well as
tutors and educational therapists in private practice. Scholarships are
not offered to parents who will teach only their own children.
What kinds of training courses are eligible
for scholarship support?
Scholarships are offered for multisensory structured language education
(MSLE) teacher training courses. In recent years, the most frequently
supported programs have been Orton-Gillingham and Slingerland trainings.
Educators are welcome to apply for scholarships for other training courses
as long as these courses have received accreditation by the International
Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) or another
member of the Alliance that accredits training
programs in multisensory structured language education.
Why is it important for educators to be trained
in multisensory structured language education (MSLE) approaches?
Research has shown that explicit, systematic, phonics-based approaches
are necessary for many children to "break the code" of our language
and become proficient readers and spellers. Unfortunately, the training
provided in most teacher preparation programs is not sufficient to ensure
that teachers become proficient in the use of MSLE approaches, so it is
important to seek out such training as part of one's ongoing professional
development.
Who should consider getting MSLE training?
Training in MSLE techniques is important both for mainstream classroom
teachers and for educators of children with specific language learning
disabilities like dyslexia. This includes resource specialists, special
day class teachers, paraprofessionals, tutors and educational therapists,
as well as mainstream classroom teachers. MSLE techniques--while indispensable
for students with dyslexia--are beneficial for all learners. Thus, teachers
who use MSLE techniques in their regular classrooms help each of their
students, not just those with learning differences.
For what grades is MSLE training most appropriate?
MSLE training is vital for everyone who teaches students of any age with
language learning disabilities. Because such disabilities are sometimes
not identified until later grades, it is especially important that teachers
of grades K-2 get MSLE training, since the early identification and remediation
of learning disabilities is crucial in preventing future academic problems
and the devastating experience of school failure.
Where can one learn about upcoming MSLE teacher
training programs?
Each year, the NCBIDA Winter Newsletter lists several upcoming trainings
in Northern California. This list is not exhaustive, so educators may
wish to investigate other options on their own.
How can one apply for a scholarship?
Applications are available in early February of each year. Call (650)
328-7667 to request an application. Be sure to provide the spelling of
your name, complete address with zip code, telephone number, and email
address.
When are applications due?
Applications are due in early April. In February, the exact deadline for
scholarship applications will be announced in the Winter Newsletter.
When are applicants informed whether or not
they have been awarded a scholarship?
Applicants are notified in early May.
How much of the teacher training course costs
are covered by the NCBIDA scholarship?
NCBIDA scholarships typically cover between 50% and 90% of the cost of
tuition. Sometimes additional funds are awarded to cover part of the travel
and lodging costs of those traveling a long distance to their teacher
training course.
If one has questions about NCBIDA's scholarship
program that are not answered here, where can one call?
Please call (650) 328-7667 and leave a message for the scholarship committee
or send an email to scholarships@dyslexia-ncbida.org.
