SLINGERLAND SHORT COURSES
Slingerland Techniques for Reading
Dates / Times: June 16-18, 2008, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
This course addresses the relationship of learning reading skills to the acquisition of oral language and its development. Multisensory techniques that begin with single units of sight, sound and feel and progress to larger units will be taught and practiced. These techniques include decoding skills, phrase-reading, vocabulary development, fluency skills, reading with comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills leading to increased fluency and comprehension.

Slingerland Screening Skills
Dates / Times: June 23-24, 2008, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
An introduction to Slingerland screening procedures - these procedures help identify students with specific language disabilities. The tests aid in identifying children whose current language difficulties may continue beyond periods of development or maturational lag and become persistent specific language disabilities in later grades - learn how to identify, compare, assist and refer.

Handwriting Skills
Dates / Times: June 26-27, 2008, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
Discover instructional techniques for teaching manuscript and cursive handwriting using the Slingerland multisensory Approach. The participant will become proficient with both writing forms and learn methods of presenting handwriting to all levels of students. The participant will learn the developmental stages of handwriting in a student, the ability to identify breakdowns in the learning process and develop lesson plans; styles of letter form including manuscript and cursive AND much more!.

The courses also qualify for graduate level continuing education units from the University of San Diego (for an additional fee).

Practicum
Dates / Times: June 16 - July 3, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Tuition: $600
Instructor: Judy Gaughf, M.Ed.
This three-week practicum is an introductory course for classroom teachers, tutors, and educational therapists interested in prescriptive teaching. It will provide research-based reading instruction techniques for students who need structure to function successfully in all areas of language arts, including reading, writing, spelling, and speaking. Participants will learn about the components of the structured language training lesson plan, the methodology to teach a lesson, the philosophy behind the multi-sensory lesson, and the scope and sequence of linguistic information needed to teach at various levels.
Topics to be covered: Multisensory training methods; Structured language lessons; Analysis of linguistic patterns; found in English language; Decoding strategies; Encoding strategies using simultaneous oral spelling; Six Kinds of Syllables, Four Rules of Syllabication
